4 Benefits of Maintaining Plants at Home for Health

Most house plants are kept as decoration, without many knowing that maintaining plants at home also has health benefits. Basically, plants are producers of oxygen, as well as home plants that are relatively small in size. Some types of house plants also function to maintain the air quality around the house.

1. The presence of plants at home helps us breathe
Humans breathe by breathing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, but plants with photosynthesis do the opposite. This is the main advantage of maintaining plants around or inside the house.

However, keep in mind that plants need enough sunlight to maximize photosynthesis. This photosynthesis process stops at night where almost all plants begin to inhale oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Research by NASA shows that plants can clean indoor air by capturing various pollutant particles in the air. This is also supported by further research that found that plants can reduce levels of ozone gas released by household and office electronic devices.
One of the ways to reduce air quality inside the house is the volatile organic compounds (VOC) contaminants released by household appliances such as plastic cleaning materials, building materials, and paint. The occurrence of respiratory tract disorders begins with the entry of germs along with dust particles that cause infection or trigger the occurrence of asthma. This is easy to happen in environments with low humidity. Plants stored in the house can also reduce dust particles by increasing the humidity of the air, through evaporation of water from the roots or soil stored in plant pots.
One study has proven that with hanging plants, this can reduce dust levels in the room by up to 30% in about three months. Plants themselves, in general, contribute to water content in the air layer by up to 10%.
